PHILADELPHIA, PA – May 6, 2020 – Entercom, a leading media and entertainment company and one of the two largest radio broadcasters in the U.S., raised funds to provide 156,684 meals for people in need through The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB). Timed to coincide with the global day of giving and unity to support COVID-19 emergency relief efforts, “Feed New England Radiothon,” presented by Shaw’s and Star Market, directly benefits families in Eastern Massachusetts as well as food banks throughout the New England region. Joe Jonas of the chart-topping musical group Jonas Brothers, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Charlie Puth, singer and songwriter Noah Cyrus, legendary Boston comedian and actor Lenny Clarke, and New England Patriots safety and three-time Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty joined Entercom Boston stations to support the fundraiser.
“I want to thank our selfless listeners and our incredible staff for coming together to support those throughout New England who have been deeply affected by this unprecedented pandemic,” said Mark Hannon, Regional President and Market Manager, Entercom Boston. “Local radio has the unique power to bring communities together in times of difficulty and today’s efforts are a clear representation of that unity. I’m delighted to have partnered with Shaw’s and Star Market to serve our neighbors in need through the generous work of The Greater Boston Food Bank.”
“Many of Entercom Boston’s radio stations have supported our hunger-relief efforts in the past, but today all of them have joined together as one voice to help food banks in New England meet the increased demand and get more food out to those in need,” said Catherine D’Amato, President and Chief Executive Officer, GBFB. “We are very thankful to all the great people at Entercom and to all the generous listeners for their overwhelming support which will help keep the emergency food network strong during this difficult time.”
The fundraiser was part of the company’s Stay Connected initiative, which unifies its crisis efforts to meaningfully impact public health and wellbeing through compelling content, promotions and partnerships to support local communities. “Feed New England” was broadcast live on Mix 104.1 (WWBX-FM), Magic 106.7 (WMJX-FM), 103.3 AMP Radio (WODS-FM), WAAF-HD2, and across the entire WEEI Sports Radio Network (WEEI-AM/FM, WVEI-AM), covering the states of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island on Tuesday, May 5 from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. ET. Listeners were encouraged to donate via phone throughout the broadcast, with online and text message donations continuing until May 6 at 10:00 a.m.
In April 2020, GBFB’s distribution increased to over 9.5 million pounds of food, while the previous month saw a distribution of 8.1 million pounds of food. These are the two highest distribution months in GBFB’s 40-year history and 50% more food than GBFB distributed during the same period in 2019.
